The housing boom of the early part of this decade is evident with annual housing permits hovering between 13,000 and 16,000 since 1999. 2006 saw the beginings of a decline in permits as the housing market has slowed, but still stayed over 13,000 total permits. 2007, however saw the bottom drop out as permits for the year fell to 7,340, the lowest annual figure since 1991.

With the exception of 1985 and 1986, most permits have been for single family housing. The late 1990's saw a rise in the number of multi-family permits but single family still far outnumber multi-family. The decline in the housing market has impacted both single family and multi-family permits as both dropped to the lowest points since the early 1990's.
